Our Need/Our Essence Artist Book
The aim of Our Need/Our Essence was to create an edition of 20 hand built and hand printed artist books. The books illustrate the concept that humans have had a need throughout history to create, collect, build and change, specifically environmental and architectural elements. The illustrations of human-like creatures, who can almost be viewed as higher beings, are engaged in a process of building, creating and changing an imagined city. Research into the technical and conceptual elements of the project was key in developing this work.

Edition of 20, Accordion Style Book. All illustrations are linocuts.

  • The aim of Our Need/Our Essence was to create an edition of 20 hand built and hand printed artist books. The planning stage included reading books that illustrated and explained the history of human need to create, such as Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. Sketches before the final illustrations, and several generations of mock up books to get an idea of how to construct the final version were done as well. The research, planning and construction skills learned while making this book will help with the technical and conceptual aspects of printing and constructing artist books in the future.
